Allstate 400 at the Brickyard (2005–2009)
NASCAR's Sprint Cup Series: Brickyard 400 is 160 laps and 400 miles of blur-inducing speed. This relatively new race at the famous 2.5-mile oval of Indianapolis Motor Speedway attracts among the largest crowds of any Sprint Cup Series event.
Brickyard 400 has taken place annually since 1994 and was the first race for vehicles other than open-wheel cars on the famous Indianapolis Motor Speedway oval. With a relatively short history, the Brickyard 400 is long on excitement, and always a popular favorite with fans at Indianapolis.
The first Brickyard 400 set an all-time NASCAR record as more than 250,000 fans turned out for the
historic event. A young Jeff Gordon scored his first of what is now four victories at Indy and started a new tradition in NASCAR that has helped push the sport to new levels. Other than the iconic Daytona 500, the Brickyard 400 is perhaps the most prestigious race on the NASCAR schedule. Jimmie Johnson has left his mark on the race with three wins over the last four years and Tony Stewart has also picked up two wins at Indy. The Brickyard 400 has been a great indicator of who is going to win the NASCAR Sprint Cup title as half of the 16 winners have gone on to take the championship.
In 2008. Jimmie Johnson survived an exploding tire but went on to tear down the track to claim victory. In 2009, Johnson claimed victory again — to become the only driver in Brickyard history with back-to-back wins at the Brickyard 400.
If you would have asked some of the early pioneers of NASCAR whether they would ever see stock car racing at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, they probably would have looked at you like you were crazy. For nearly a century the only race ever held at the famous track was the Indianapolis 500, but that all changed in 1994 when NASCAR inaugurated the wildly popular Brickyard 400.
Odds to win 2010 Brickyard 400
Jamie McMurray, 34, won the 2010 Brickyard 400 on Sunday, July 25. Montoya suffered a heartbreaking defeat for the second consecutive year at Indy, opening the door for McMurray to become just the third driver in NASCAR history to win the Brickyard 400 and Daytona 500 in the same year.
2009 Brickyard 400 Winner
Former Indy 500 winner Juan Pablo Montoya dominated most of the race, leading 116 laps. However, with 35 laps to go, Montoya was penalized for speeding in the pits. The infraction left Jimmie Johnson holding off polesitter Mark Martin for the victory. Johnson becomes the second three-time winner, and the first back–to–back winner of the 400.
