At 600 miles, this is one of the longest races on the Sprint Cup schedule, and one of the most grueling stock car races around. The race itself has been held since 1960. From 1960-1985, then, the race was called the World 600.
Located in the heart of NASCAR country, fans flock to Lowes Motor Speedway each Memorial Day weekend tobet on their favorite drivers. The race is special, as well as the day, during the afternoon, racing fans have their eyes glued to the Indianapolis 500, and at night, they head to Charlotte Motor Speedway.
Recent races here have been dominated by Jimmie Johnson, who has won multiple Coca Cola 600s. However, looking over the list of past winners is like viewing a "who's who" in NASCAR, including Jeff Gordon and Dale Earnhardt.
Coca Cola 600 Winners and Results
2010 Coca Cola 600 Winner
Kurt Busch: driver of the No. 2 Miller Light Dodge, held off a hard-charging Jamie McMurray to win the Coca-Cola 600 for the first time. He is the seventh driver to win both the NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race and the Coca-Cola 600 in the same year.
The victory is Busch’s first points paying win at Charlotte Motor Speedway. McMurray, driver of the No. 1 Bass Pro Shops/Tracker Boats Chevrolet, finished second, and Kyle Busch, driver of the M&M's Pretzel Toyota finished in the third position.
2009 Coca Cola 600 Winner
David Reutimann: In 2009, NASCAR called the event after 227 of a scheduled 400 laps. That made a first-time winner of Reutimann, who parlayed a strategic call by crew chief Rodney Childers into the unlikely victory.
David Reutimann is in his third Cup season and previously won in the Camping World Truck and Nationwide series. He became the latest to earn his inaugural Cup victory in NASCAR's longest race, joining David Pearson (1961), Jeff Gordon ('94), Bobby Labonte ('95), Matt Kenseth (2000) and Casey Mears ('07).
