Since 2008, Sunoco, the Pennsylvania-based official fuel supplier for NASCAR, and the Philadelphia region of the American Red Cross came to a sponsorship agreement for the race and charitable events to be held in order to benefit the American Red Cross in the South Pennsylvania-Philadelphia region.
Most commonly known simply as the Pennsylvania 500, the Sunoco Red Cross Pennsylvania 500 is the second of two NASCAR Sprint Cup Series stock car races hosted at the famous Pocono Raceway in Long Pond, Pennsylvania.
The 2.5 mile tri-oval track at Long Pond is one of the most unique racing facilities found on the Sprint Cup Series circuit, and with the longest straightaway of all the NASCAR tracks, the Pocono Raceway always promises to provide plenty of overtaking and lead changes.
Pennsylvania 500 Winners and Results
Recent winners have included Denny Hamlin and Carl Edwards, but unlike some other NASCAR events there really has never been a standout driver to dominate at Pocono. So you just never know who is going to step up and win the Pennsylvania 500.
2010 Pennsylvania 500 Winner
Greg Biffle took the lead from Sam Hornish, Jr., on the first lap back under green after a red flag period with 21 circuits left and then powered away to a solid 3.599-second margin of victory over pole sitter Tony Stewart in Sunday’s 2010 Sunoco Red Cross Pennsylvania 500 at Pocono Raceway. It was the first win of the season for Biffle, Roush/Fenway Racing and Ford. It was also Biffle’s first at Pocono and 15th of his NASCAR Sprint Cup career.
2009 Pennsylvania 500 Winner
Denny Hamlin won in 2009 after rain postponed the race from Sunday to Monday. Pocono had debuted NASCAR's double-file restart rule in June; in August it helped Hamlin gain positions with the leaders sometimes racing four abreast.
