NASCAR Odds – Bet Pocono 500 at Pocono Raceway

Pocono 500 Betting Online

June-8-2008 / Sunday - 1:00 PM
Location: Long Pond, PA
Type of Track: Speedway
Length: 2.50 miles
Shape: Tri-oval
Banking: 8°

Jeff Gordon will look for his fourth career Pocono 500 checkered flag when NASCAR's best take on this unique raceway on Sunday, June 8. Pocono's funky design, with three different turns and three different lengths of straights, offers one heck of a test for even the most seasoned of
racing veterans.

Pocono 500 Race Odds

Pocono Raceway (formerly Pocono International Raceway) is the 1st of 2 stock car races in the NASCAR Sprint Cup, sanctioned superspeedway located in the Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania at Long Pond. The Pocono 500 is typically scheduled in mid-June; the other is the Pennsylvania 500, typically held in July. Both races are unique because neither has a title sponsor. They have had no title sponsor since 1996. The Pocono 500 started in 1982, when it replaced a 400-mile race at the Texas World Speedway.

Pocono Is Like No Other NASCAR Track
First, it’s a triangular oval. There are only three turns, each connected by a straightaway of varying lengths. Each turn is modeled after turns at 3 different tracks. Turn One was modeled after the now defunct Trenton Speedway, Turn Two is like Indianapolis Motor Speedway and Turn 3 is similar to The Milwaukee Mile.

There are other 2.5-mile race tracks in America, but there is no other track like Pocono Raceway.

The longest straightaway, the front stretch, stretches 3,740 feet long and leads into Turn 1, a 14-degree turn that is like a turn you’d find on a superspeedway.

From there, a 3,055-foot straightaway connects to the “tunnel turn,” an 8-degree turn over the tunnel leading into the track’s infield that drivers say is like a turn they find on short tracks. Because of the speeds and the angle that drivers must approach that turn, the “tunnel turn” is widely considered one of the most difficult in NASCAR.

From there, it’s 1,780 feet to Turn 3, a 6-degree turn that has a road-course feel for the drivers.

Put all of those things together and you’ve got Pocono Raceway, a track that has challenged NASCAR’s best since the first Cup race there in 1974.

Some past winners are: Jeff Gordon (1996, 1997, and 2007), Carl Edwards (2005), Jimmie Johnson (2004), Jeremy Mayfield (1998 and 2000), and Kyle Petty (1993). Last year, the race went to 106 laps/265 miles due to rain. The 2005 race went to 201 laps/502.5 miles because of a green-white-checkered rule. Bet Pocono 500

NASCAR Basics

With almost a 53-year history, the National Association of Stock Car Auto Racing (NASCAR) has enjoyed a growth in its prestige, fan base, prize money, importance and devotion. NASCAR's inaugural season began in 1948 with the first NASCAR-sanctioned stock car race staged on the Daytona Beach, Fla., road course on February 15.

The NASCAR Busch Series was added to NASCAR portfolio in 1982 and has earned a well-deserved reputation as a training ground for future NASCAR Winston Cup stars. Jeff Gordon, Bobby Labonte, Dale Jarrett, Ward and Jeff Burton are just a few of the current regulars who participate. And some drivers even choose to spend their entire racing careers in the NASCAR series. Today, two of the top-four attended forms of motor sports in the USA are NASCAR-sanctioned divisions.
